Sensitive to baby sister

Hi 

I have a 3 year old little boy who I believe is autistic but awaiting a diagnosis. He can be the most lovely, funny and cheeky little boy. However since giving birth to my baby girl, he has struggled with her crying and making any sort of noise. As soon as she makes the slightest of noises, he screams and shouts and eventually gets very upset and starts to cry and have a complete meltdown. He has sometimes tried to hit her but we've intervened before he can get to her.

I obviously don't want her to stop talking or making noises cause thats how she learns and she's only going to get louder but I'm struggling on how I can support or stop my little boy screaming. So any advice on how to stop this before it gets worse would be much appreciated.

  • Does he have any ear defenders? If they aren't enough, even headphones with some of his own music or even just calming sounds? 

    My son was struggling with his little sister's meltdowns, but it's happened a lot older. If I notice him struggling (he's 12 now), I prompt him to put his headphones on and say he can get some quiet time in his room. I make sure he knows it's not a punishment and maybe take him a treat up so he knows it's more special time and he's needs are important too as well as trying to calm my daughter.
