EHCP deadline passed

Hi.

So we got a 4.5 yo, mostly non-verbal, very limited speech understanding child, still in nappies and a pushchair. We got a diagnosis privately (in a hope this would help him and probably us, yea, I know, how naive!) about a month ago, as the waiting list in our area was over three years. The ehcna was initiated at the beginning of spring, and it seemed like we might just be in time before September, when we need to start at the local mainstream. Now, the deadline that was given to us was this Saturday (not even working day - why?..) but it obviously has passed and no changes there. No decision, nobody got back to us, nothing.

What do we do next? This is exhausting, knowing you're completely on your own, trying to reverse-engineer and make sense of a system, where components aren't visible or obvious.

  • Dear DoraXplora,

Thank you for your message. I completely understand your frustration, The EHCNA system is facing lengthy delays. Does your child attend a preschool or setting? if so, there should be a SENCo in place who can help you. I would also recommend contacting the SEND department at your local council to request an update. Hopefully you should have a contact when they acknowledged you EHCNA so I would recommend trying them first.

You could also talk to the school where your child is due to attend in September and ask for support.

I really hope you hear positive news soon.

    With best wishes,

    Anna Mod

  • Thank you for your reply.

He goes to a nursery, at the reduced hours. He's about to start reception in September. We've contacted our council, but had no reply. Yet. And nursery senco, we think, is in similar position to us.

The difficulty of the whole process and especially the delays is frustrating, indeed. We'll just keep emailing people and waiting.
