9 Year old, trouble making decisions.

I have a 9 year old, we are waiting for an Autism assessment. It feels like things are getting harder for him. At the moment I’m trying to help him with making decisions,  he struggles a lot with this, at the moment he struggles making a decision about what he wants to eat, it could be about a meal or even a simple decision of what snack he wants.

sometimes I’ve tried making the decision for him, but that doesn’t always work, sometimes I try get him to choose left or right to help make a decision, sometimes works.

He just gets so anxious, starts rubbing his hands and getting upset then ends up hiding under his blanket (he calls it his bunker), he so hard seeing him get so anxious and upset.

Has anyone had any experience of this and any advice.

  • Hi, I really struggle making decisions about what to eat too (I do have IBS and ARFID which complicates matters and have a very hard time telling if I am hungry and what I want). Looking at pictures of the options (I used to take pictures of my plate for my dietitian so have quite a few I can use) or looking at the actual food options can help me realise what it is that I feel drawn to. I’m not sure why this works but it can sometimes really help. Maybe this is something you could give a try?
