Puberty

I got in touch with my husbands cousin who has three children who are Autistic. One is younger than my Son and two are older my Son is nine ten in the summer. My husband’s cousin said her older two started puberty at my Sons age, I can’t see any signs of puberty yet but what should I look out for?  He still seems like a little boy in many ways, his voice, how he presents  but he is growing a lot.

  • 9 is still very young. It can vary a lot from child to child, what age they start. My experience working in a school is on average at about 13-15 their voices change and they get hairier and smellier. Some boys will develop earlier and others later. They are all different. The rapid growth is probably one of the first things you'll notice. You may also find that he will go through challenging stages with behaviour and emotions as the hormone changes can be difficult to deal with. I wouldn't worry too much about the age other children started puberty as it is so variable.
