wait times for diagnosis

My 2yr old son had his first assessment last week where they informally told us that he is autistic - however they want to wait another year before they give a formal diagnosis. ( they want to also do a genetic test in this time) has anyone else worked around the long wait time between appointments? they have already said he is showing many autistic traits but to make us wait a whole year to give us a formal diagnosis sounds crazy we're so desperate for answers so we can start to process this news as a family, and to keep us waiting a year with so many unasnwered questions really doesn't seem fair to any of us. any advice you can give us we would really appreciate

  • there is no genetic test for autism - so assume that's for something else they are screening for

Also the year may be, too early to assess at the moment and not simply a waiting time

If this is NHS - then some of their waiting times (excluding Right to Choose route) is 5+ years.  Waiting time privately for me was less than a month - but I suspect its more to do with the early age of your son, effectively meaning too young to diagnose
