Dad having difficulty communicating with ASC Son

My Son is nine and has ASC, despite advice from professionals some with experience or Autism training about how to communicate with our Son who has speech but has communication and language delays, his Dad cannot seem to communicate with him without taking into account our Sons communication differences.  He will speak quickly, use jargon or slang and not make eye contact, in contrast he will occasionally speak to him in broken English.,He will rarely use pictures or makaton. I can panic.and find communication difficult when we’re in a situation where there’s a potential for a meltdown or tantrum and I can’t think quickly enough but as I rule I speak clearly to him use simple language, pictures and makaton.  This communication issue is causing my Son to lash out often and I feel by both his parents communicating with him more effectively this could be significantly reduced.  Any advice please?

  • Hi there and welcome to the forum.

It will seem like a very personal question to start with. For this I will apologise for - I am an autistic adult, but also a parent to two autistic children.

Does your son's dad have a diagnosis of autism himself? The reason I ask this is that what you are describing about dad's communication do sound like traits of communication by an autistic person.

I am so sorry to hear about how this affects your son. I agree that this could be significantly reduced by how he is communicated with. The reason I ask the first question is that if his dad is autistic, then I believe that his dad addressing his own autism should help him communicate in a different way. And that this would help you all.

I think that probably my response has not answered your question in the way you had hoped for. Despite this, I hope that things improve for your son and for you.

    xx Mrs Snooks

  • Hi and thank you for welcoming me,  My Sons Dad feels he is Autistic but he’s not totally sure if he wants an official diagnosis or not.  If he does  seek an assessment I think it could help
