Autistic Burnout

Hi.

I'm new here but desperate for advice on how to help my 18 year old daughter with autistic burnout.

My daughter was diagnosed ASD is 2021. We have had no support, advice or input since. Nothing in place throughout school or college.

Over the past 6 to 8 months she has become extremely exhausted and was diagnosed 2 weeks ago by the GP with autistic burnout. The GP also advised she tests for ADHD.

Some of the changes I’ve seen are:

constant total exhaustion
significant drop in self‑care (food, laundry, basic routines)
avoiding academic support, has now left her college course as she finds it too stressful
withdrawing from previous interests , hobbies and passions with people that have known her since she was a toddler
difficulty managing day‑to‑day tasks
She has anxiety about leaving the house, is overwhelmed, withdrawn and her mood seems very low.

I’d really appreciate any advice.

Thank you.

  • Hi

I had the same with my son in 2022 when he was 18. It took a few years to get over & we are still not in a happy place.

All I can say is you need to ride it out & look after yourself too.

Regarding help, I began to wonder at why certain people were in certain roles that were deemed as offering support. I didn't expect a solution; but didn't expect a dark void of nothingness either.

I managed to get an EHCP, which was a turning point as the extra cash for college opened education options. But the cost of paying for his needs as an adult, plus the day to day is crippling.

I try to focus in small things each day. I would love to know what happens next as I don't feel I can continue with this intensity of care & demand for much longer.

Sorry I can't provide a solution; just empathy.
