desperately trying to potty train!

Dear all,

Our son is 3-years-old (he will be 4 in November), and he is currently undergoing assessment for ASD (we have been told to expect a diagnosis of semantic pragmatic disorder).

We have been trying to potty train on and off for about 18-months, but have been really trying for about 4 months now. Our son knows when he is having a wee and a poo, because he will tell us, but he refuses to do them on the toilet. He won't sit on the potty at all. We stick to a routine of regularly sitting him on the potty at routine times, and trying to bribe him with favourite things. We have sat with him for spells of up to an hour (while he watches Numberjacks on the i-pad), only for him to get off the toilet and wet himself minutes later. We've tried putting him in normal pants, pull-ups, pants with pull-ups over the top, running around naked in the garden, but he'll still wet himself regardless, and over and over again, and tell you that he's done it but make no move towards the toilet before the accident. We have numerous potty books and picture sequence cards, and he understands the order of what to do. We've tried explaining to him that nappies are dirty and for babies, and that big boys go in the toilet, and we question him about this to see if he understands, and he does. We take him into the toilet to watch daddy pee, but he refuses to look, but he'll happily put his hands in the toilet when it's flushing.

We are really stuck now because, in all this time, we have only managed to get him to pee on the toilet once, and he was very uncomfortable about this when it happened. If anyone could give us some tips or advice, it would be much appreciated!

Many thanks
