Recent diagnosis for my daughter who is 8 years old- advice please!

Hi All,

My 8-year-old daughter has recently been diagnosed with ASD by a right-to-choose provider who has been brilliant from the start.

I need some advice on where to start. What do I need to do?

I am currently waiting for the provider to send out the report, and I am overwhelmed by what to do.

Thanks

Becky

  • Good morning from America, Becky93!

I’m an Autistic dad of an Autistic daughter (age 7). We diagnosed it when she was 4 or 5.

So without knowing much about y’all’s background, some good points to start is: Communicate with your daughter’s school & consider therapy. Communication with the school is really key to ensure that your daughter gets any accommodations that she might need. Therapy can be helpful to teach her skills to help adapt and stay calm during situations when she is overstimulated or upset. We did art therapy with our daughter and though she might not always apply the skills she learned in that therapy (ex. taking deep breaths), it did make a difference.

If you have any questions, please don’t be afraid to ask.
