EHCP - existing school

My son is having his EHC needs assessment currently. Assuming we get granted an EHCP, my assumption is the local authority will consult his current mainstream school first.

What would happen if they reject it? They definitely could support him with the right funding, but there's no guarantee that's what is written in the draft EHCP.

Would the local authority just consult other mainstream schools initially and see if there any other takers?

Or would they go straight to look at autism/COIN units?

  • Dear ukasddad,

Thank you for your post. The SENDCo at your child's school should be supporting you throughout this process so it may be worth having a chat with them first.

I will also signpost you to the government advice page on EHC needs assessments, please find the link here:

    https://www.gov.uk/children-with-special-educational-needs/extra-SEN-help

Your local authority should have a detailed account of what happens during the assessment and what may happen following the assessment on their website so I would suggest looking there too.

Other members on this site may also share their stories but in the meantime I hope the above information is useful to you.

    With best wishes,

    Anna Mod
