EHCP application before or after diagnosis

Hi all, I’m wondering if anyone can offer advise that may have been through the EHCP process.

Our little boy (currently 3 years old) is autistic and non-verbal following a regression from speaking around 2 years old.  We’ve started the process for an ASD assessment through the NHS, however we know how long this can take.  We would be due to apply for his school place now to start next September, however we will be making the application to defer him for a year and start in reception 1 year later.

We’re certain that his needs through school will need the support of an EHCP and so we’ve been hoping to look to get this in place prior to starting.  I think we’ve managed to get all of the information that we can from online research regarding the EHCP process and are wondering if anyone has any suggestions of anyone that can offer more advice around specifics of the EHCP process?

For example, our main question right now is whether or not to start the EHCP process without the diagnosis as this is likely not be completed prior to starting school.  If we applied now without it, is there a risk of rejection.  If so, could we reapply once we have the diagnosis and would it look negatively on our case having already applied.

If anyone is able to point us in the direction of anyone that could maybe offer more specific advice to our situation?

Thank you all in advance for you help!

Dan

  • i would start the process now. my one son didnt have his ehcp process started till year 1 and that was because the school he attended at the time time told us that it couldnt be done untill than which is not true. my youngest we started his ehcp process in nursery and that was before any diagnosis. there is always a cahnce of rejection however if you have the right evidence to help than it makes the decision to asses for a EHC easier. the application for the ehc starts with the needs to assess. So you need to show the local autority that there is a need to assess your son for a plan to help him

  • Dear Dan,

Welcome to the online community, it is great to have you here. I hope our online community is able to provide you some support. I am Olivia one of the online community moderators.

From my understanding EHCP are given based on need, so it isn't 100% necessary to have a diagnosis when initially applying. However, it can strengthen the case to have a preexisting diagnosis but many children will receive an EHCP without this.
