Residential care

I am really struggling with the reality of my son moving into residential care and the lack of control we have in this situation. We found a suitable placement but getting them to understand our sons needs is very difficult. Comminication is hit and miss and issues dont get addressed in the right way even though all staff are trained in autism. It feels exhausting constantly repeating the same things over and over again. Is anyone else struggling with any similar situations.

Have you considered creating a guidance document for them so you don't have to go over it every time?

A one page headline doc and maybe few more pages on details of specific interactions would be all it takes, then this can be laminated and left at the entrance to the care room / flat.

Unfortunately you will lose a lot of the detail and personalisation of care due to the production line approach that care companies use, plus their turnover of staff.

However you can balance this with the independence your son is now having and the time that it frees for you - a trade off that has more advantages than downsides.

As a parent you will always worry but it sounds like you have made the right decision here. Change is difficult but it seems the right thing to have done.
