School Attendance

Good Morning,

1st time on here, just after some advice. My 16 year old son has ASD, APD, ODD and Dyslexia. Since starting high school he has developed school avoidance. He has been told that he can't play football because of his low attendance. I have stated that I felt that this was an unreasonable punishment and was against the equality act. School have said it is nothing to do with his ASD, but his attendance. His attendance is due to his ASD, so is this against the equality act?

Parents
  • Have you ever had any meetings with school about his attendance? If not, call one. Make a list of the reasons that he struggles to attend quoting how his diagnosis causes/impacts this. Ask the school what they are going to put in place to allow him to attend. Ask them how taking away one of the only things he likes, is likely to encourage him to attend. Make your point again that they are not making the adjustments needed for your son to be able to attend school so why should he be punished for having those needs.
