4.5 am still non verbal. Any advice or tips please?

My son is 4.5 years old and still not saying any words. He used to say “mama” and “dada,” but he stopped saying even that. I’m worried he might never speak. We use pictures for communication and reference. I would love to hear tips from other parents on how they helped their children learn to talk. He communicates perfectly well without using actual words.

  • When my son was younger (younger than your son), he was referred by the health visitor to a speech and language therapist. He was verbal, but not as verbal as other children of his age, and also had echolalia. He's now 30 and more articulate than me.

    I have no tips as such that I can offer. When my son was seeing the speech and language therapist, they advised me on things to put into practice at home with my son, which was tailored to his specific needs.

    You don't say if you are based in the UK, or if your son has ever been seen by a speech and language therapist.
