3 year old non verbal has me puzzled

I care for My 3 year old non verbal autistic grandson. He is currently working with a speech therapist to learn sign language. He says absolutely no words....except...when I show him a flash card and say the word 2 times he will take the card from my hand and look at it and say the word perfectly! But I have to say the word twice and with the card for him to do this. He doesn't carry over these words in general communication. Like I said, he says nothing. This has me so puzzled. I keep trying to understand the logic or rationalize this but I can't. Does anyone have any theories or advice or has anyone had the same type of experience? It would be greatly appreciated

  • Hi, this is echolalia. It best to use whatever means to promote speech by whatever means, use it as a way in. I used flashcards a LOT. Find what he really likes and encourage speech through that. My son was into Thomas the tank engine and was obsessed with a childrens thomas laptop but learnt so much from that like sounds of letters etc. It best to encourage any speech and try to kind of play verbal tennis. Can be hard work and very repetitive but can really pay off. Early intervention is key, he's at a good age for it.  Hope that helps.
