EHCP - PDA but strong cognitively - picking the right school

Our EHCNA is going in soon - so we're starting to think ahead to what kind of school is best for him. We're waiting on an Ed Psych report (pre-EHCP, through the school), and also the full report from his diagnosis. Are these likely to give a recommendation, e.g. High COIN, Low COIN?

And most importantly, if they do, will they also state their opinion on his cognitive abilities? Both professionals mentioned verbally he seemed very bright and strong cognitively (and we agree), but are they likely to write that?

Building on that, the EHCP Section F will state the special provision he needs - but will any section state his strengths, and thus require that he attend a school where he can be challenged?

Our SENCO already advised against a couple of special schools on the grounds that he wouldn't be challenged.

Does anyone have any experience of getting an EHCP that names a school where their child can be both supported and fully challenged?

  • I don't know the ins and outs of the EHCP process. But school wise, depending on your area, you may find a SEND base attached to a mainstream school night suit him better ability wise. But you'd need to make sure his place was secured in this base and that they wouldn't be trying to move him into the mainstream school at a later date (unless that was agreed to be in his best interests).
