Here i go again!

Hello, i already  have a 10 year old son with autism. I have 2 neurotypical daughters, and a 3 year old son. My 3 year old has been seeing a speech therapist for 1 year, last week she told me she was refering him to a language delay clinic. I questioned her about her thoughts (she knows my 10 year old) she said she knew that i had experience of these circumstances, and my 3 year old is totally different to my 10 year old, but the spectrum was vast. Which says it all.  My 3 year old is socialble, he plays with other children, and also does imaginitive play.  I know i am probably  deluding myself, but he doesn't have any traits other that language delay to suggest autism. My fear is he will see a specialist and the will diagnose him, can i refuse a diagnosis, or at least delay it until i am satisfied he is on the spectrum? My son is not the only experience i have, my parents and sister all do adult placement, so i have lived with aspergers and autism since the age of 17, i am now 37. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Vicky

  • Our son never had a diagnosis until we said we wanted to get one which was 2 years after we started the statement route for support in school. All the documents referred to ASD/ADHD but no formal diagnosis.  He received a statement, based on the information provided by the agencies, school and ourselves and certainly then, a diagnosis was not a requirement to getting support in school.  He was 6 yrs old when we started progressing the statement and we asked for the diagnosis when he was 8 yrs old.

The SLT involved in providing the diagnosis did say if we felt things had changed to go back to her as it is not cast in stone and as they grow up different traits/behaviour can appear or reduce.

It has to be your choice, but as long as the school are aware of his needs when he starts school and you are monitoring things yourself, as I am sure you would be, I do not see the need to rush into a diagnosis.  It could be picked up at any time you felt things had progressed or his needs were increasing.

Ask the specialists their view, Ed Psych, Senco, Parent Partnership etc.  Is the Speech Therapist a specialist in Social Communication?

Good luck with it all, I am sure it will fall into place with your guidance.

    Best wishes
