Hi, I wonder if anyone has any ideas which would help our 14 year old son with AS.

He has improved dramatically at mainstream school and I cannot believe that I am actually now concerned about his academic achievements rather than his behaviour and happiness at school (he has had tremendous problems, exclusions, etc).  The problem he has is that he has plenty of knowledge on all school subjects but struggles to get this down on paper; he is hopeless in his English classes and although all teachers agree he has great knowledge in other subjects he probably wont do that well because he cannot grasp the idea of having to write what he knows done.  I wonder if anyone else has experience like this and any suggestions to help him.  Thanks everyone x

  • My sons have the same problem. Organization of thoughts is difficult, but also the phyisical efforts of writing, fine motor skills, reading skills etc. Have you tried assistive software?

    If he has organization problems kidspiration or inspration maybe good. The one you choose depends on his age really. It's slightly like mind mapping and good for people to pull info together.

    Speach to text or text to speach is also useful. My son uses draggon naturally speaking 12 to write. You speak into the microphone and it writes the words for you. Claroread V6 Pro, which reads to you and will also open PDF's etc and that is a fantastic tool especially if you have dyslexia or a slow reading and processing rate. It's available in a free download trail also, but you need to have a hi spec computer to run it.

    Hope these are useful, they were the key that opened the door for my son, however, I would say a happy child who attains the best they can is way more precious than a few letters on a GCSE grade certificate.
