Menstrual cycle in autistic 10 year old non verbal girl

Hi I am the mother of an amazing 10 year old girl. She is really struggling at the moment, she is autistic non verbal and she has started her cycle. She’s having severe meltdowns and can be really angry towards me and family members. Has anyone else been through this with their daughter and do you have any advice please.

  • Does she understand whats happening to her and why?

When my daughter started hers, we made a bit of a celebration of it, becoming a woman and gradually allowing her the things that belong to adulthood, even little things like a box of chocolates designed for adults rather than children.

  • Hi, no she has no understanding at all. She was diagnosed with autism and learning difficulties. She’s 10 but mentally I would say 7. She doesn’t hold conversations with anyone. She struggles with understanding most things to be honest.

  • That must be really really difficult, I wouldn't normally suggest something like this, but could her GP give her something to stop them? It seems totally wrong that she has to endure something that she has no understanding of or what the implications are. Could she be having PMS and thats why she's lashing out?

  • It’s really hard for her. I have phoned the doctors and they are putting her forward for a paediatric appointment as the doctors can’t help. She’s also sending a letter to gynaecologists for advice. I was wanting to reach out to parents while I wait for the appointments as yes I think she’s hsaving PMS and that’s why she’s laying out loads
