Help with excessive rocking please

Hello I am looking for advice

The adult i am caring for  quite frequently rocks however he does this to such an extent that he gets sweaty and out of breath and its obvious that his heart rate has increased to such an extent that it looks like he has been exercising hard

This worries me as its not possible for me to keep an eye on him every minute of the day and i worry  about the effects of this long term . He also is not very good at explaining what prompts this. I dont know is its  a frustration , upsetting memories, happy memories or maybe  these high caffeine drinks and sweets which he buys for himself  when he is out at his activities

This has been going on for several years (5-10)  and i just worry that they are increasing in severity  but the other issue is that i was not always his carer so cannot say for certain whether they are getting worse

Im looking for advice on how to minimise these and to minimise the harm they could cause and how common this is . Im also assuming this is a symptom of autism and not something else

Thank you

  • Why does it need to be minimised?

He is not being injured and exercise is not bad for you. He will probably find it soothing and stopping it would not help.

The only concern would be is if he is in some distress about something but you would need to ask or observe to see the pattern of cause and effect.

If it is getting worse, then perhaps there is more stimulation now from some source. This could be good (excitement) or bad (too noisy).

In general too much caffeine is not a great idea. I've noticed is does me no favours.
