Unable to attend school events and very upset little boy

We have a school event we can’t make due to work.

It’s a ‘dads afternoon’

We try to go to everything that we can but sometimes work and other commitments get in the way our little boy is beside himself and we are unsure on the best way to support him. With our other kids we could explain the situation and they would be upset but would soon bounce back. So far O has refused to eat and spent the last hour crying, he’s 5.

Any advise on how to handle this would be very much appreciated.

  • So unfortunately I don’t have a silver bullet answer that will fix the issue, but my advice is give it time and redirect.

I have a 7 year old with Autism (C) and a 4 year old we think is neurotypical (R). C - like your O - has a really hard time with disappointing or life-changing news, while R can roll with the punches easily. One example is when we recently told them that we are moving. C was inconsolable for hours, but after a few days of us explaining the exciting parts of moving she eventually became less stressed and horrified by the change. It just took time and redirection.

Maybe try to set up another fun activity with O and his father for later in the week? O probably won’t receive the redirection well at first, but if you give it time he might come around.
