Setting up a vulnerable person’s trust

I need to think about writing a will and setting up a vulnerable person’s trust for my child, who has capacity for smaller decisions but probably not for bigger ones ie financial ones. I have got some information but it all seems so overwhelming and expensive. Has anyone had any experience of this? We are thinking about a trust with Mencap but the solicitors for the will want to offer us a trust. How do we know who to trust?

  • Hi and welcome to the community.

For good reasons, the rules here don't allow us to offer legal advice to each other, although others might have experience that they can share with you.

You might like to consider contacting the NAS's wills and trust service, for which you can request a callback here:

NAS - Wills and Trusts Phone Service

"The National Autistic Society’s Wills and Trusts Phone Service allows you to speak to a qualified solicitor who can talk through your options, answer your questions, and provide the information you need before starting to make your arrangements."

I don't know whether the stated waiting time of "around 6 months" is still accurate - the page was last updated almost five years ago, so it might hopefully have changed.
