Support with emotions/changes at school

Hi all, I'm really struggling to support my son at the moment. The school have agreed he can have a laptop in his public exams, but this means he will need to use one all the time in his lessons now. He doesn't understand why even though I have clarified this with the school, and is really upset about it, headbanging and crying. Please, does anyone have any tips on how I can support him at this time?

  • I have do admit I am puzzled by this- why is he being made to use the laptop at all times now during class? This doesn’t make sense to me. I am autistic and have absolutely atrocious handwriting- I had to make do in my exams but probably could have benefited from typing. But whilst this could have been helpful, I absolutely could not use a laptop in class for note taking - my handwriting may not be legible to others but it is to me and I like to write on papers and draw when making notes. I could not learn if I had to use a laptop full time in class. so whilst I understand that for exams and tests in class, it now makes sense for your son to use a laptop so that he can get used to it and practice for the actual exams, I really do not understand the rationale behind making him use it for all lessons. In my opinion , it is quite understandable that he is upset. Have you asked him why he is upset? I think the laptop is meant to be a help for exams - but it makes no sense to force him to use one all the time in class if this is creating upset. It doesn’t make sense and is clearly counterproductive. This is just my personal opinion. I would talk to the school to sort this out.

  • The criteria for accommodations during exams in schools is that it must be the students 'usual way of learning' in the classroom.

If he doesn't use the laptop in class it is much harder for the school to justify why he should use it in an exam.

However, I agree that maybe trying a phased transition into using the laptop? Starting with some subjects or some assignments and then widening it to others?
