Looking for books/resources for 9 yr old who is anxious they are Autistic

Hi. My 9 year old daughter has been really struggling. She has very recently opened up and confided in me that she feels different from her school peers (some of whom are being rather unkind to her because of the adjustments she needs to make for her sensory needs for example) and is anxious she may be autistic and what this may mean for her now and in the future e.g she’s worried she won’t be able to get a job. My daughter is extremely bright and has a lot going for her and is rapidly loosing confidence. When I asked my daughter whether being Autistic is something she wants to look into more through school and/or other professionals she says no for the moment but is happy talking to me and her dad and wants to learn more slowly. Can anyone please suggest some books that would be suitable for a young child that wants to gently explore the possibility of being Autistic and what this might mean. Thanks.

  • I am not a parent of an autistic child, but this book has been highly recommended by parents and children of your daughter’s age. It offers a positive introduction to being autistic, although it is written for children who have already received a diagnosis of autism.

If your daughter is able to understand that the book might not be addressing her and her abilities and challenges, it might be a useful age appropriate resource for you both to explore.
