How to get a diagnosis

My husband and I are trying to get an autism diagnosis for our 9 year old daughter. I went to the GP who said they no longer do referrals and this must be done via the school. We’ve had a meeting with the school where we highlighted a list of symptoms and her class teacher is doing the same. We’re meeting next week to discuss what plan can be put in place at school. However she doesn’t have any issues at school, her symptoms are more general anxiety and in social settings. What I really want is a referral to a specialist but that doesn’t seem to be being offered.

Does anyone else have any experience like this?

  • The advice given by the NHS at the present time is that you should speak with your GP or any other health professional you are in contact with - or the school SENCO.

I can see you might have a problem if the SENCO feels unwilling to help, and the GP - for whatever reason - is stating they are unable to do referrals at the present time.

There was a post here very similar a while ago, and I don't recall the author coming back to tell us how it concluded.

I do hope that this meeting at school proves productive, and that they are able to refer - based upon your experiences and the problems with the GP alone, but if not, I do think you could end up having to speak to PALS about this problem.

PALS are a service that essentially act as liaison between Health Professional or ICB and Patient, and can hopefully either clarify or find a route for you to take in this situation.
