Grade Retention

Hi Chaps

I'm trying to sort out my son who will be going to secondary school from September can anyone tell me if they have gone for or been forced into 'Grade Retention' (child kept back a year or repeating a year).

I have reservations so I'm looking for both positive and negative stories.

Thanks

  • He mentioned one or two boys said he had to repeat because he was stupid but if it wasnt that my guess is, it would have been something else. you know what children can be like sometimes. He knows the reasons he chose to repeat and that they are nothing at all to do with his intelligence, just the fact it wasnt recognised he needed a bit of support. If we can build their believe in themselves as best we can, we can only hope it helps get them through the tough times.

  • Thank you.  Has he had any bullying at all because of it?

  • Hi,

my son is 13 and last year he repeated first year. He did not have a diagnoses in his first year in secondary school but i knew he wasn't progressing as well as i thought he should be, his grades were struggling and he was having some difficulties socially so i asked him what he thought about repeating first year and he was happy too and the school thought it was a good idea. So last sept he repeated and after christmas the school mentioned to me about getting him assessed as he was still struggling in some areas. He got a diagnoses 3months ago of aspergers and dyslexia. I'm anxious about sept coming around and how he'l manage but i'm glad he repeated as it gave us a little extra time to work on things, the thought if he hadn't and would be going into 3rd year now would have been a lot worse.

I dont know if this helps in any way
