Update on our life!

Thank you for all the positive comments on my last post, explaining that my daughter has her new business. She really enjoys it, is very popular and is definitely more suited to her needs. I could go on for ages about how proud I am of her. She is getting so independent now and one thing I must say is that she booked her own dentist appointment and went all by herself! I believe most of you would know how stressful dentists are and this is a reminder that no matter how difficult things get, or have been, they get better. Last year she point blank refused, had meltdowns and ran away whenever the dentist was even mentioned. To get to this point, I just have no words.

You also may be aware that she has been in frequent pain for years, but we always got turned away from doctors, but after loads of blood tests, which she went to independently, we have some results. She has a possible Vitamin D deficiency, and also has a positive result for Ribosomal P antibodies. Apparently a positive result for Ribosomal P anitbodies may indicate lupus, which is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks itself. When she was younger, she was diagnosed with acute ITP, and doing research, ITP is a blood condition that can occur in people with lupus, so this could be a part of it too. We have 2 future doctor appointments, which I attend with her, to discuss her results since we aren't professionals and can only go off of what the internet and results tell us. It may be nothing, but we like to be on the safe side.

I have one question today regarding what the dentist has told my daughter. He said to limit/stop chewing on things which aren't food. She is a nail biter, and has a lot of sensory needs where she needs something in her mouth, making this request from the dentist really difficult. I've bought foods, she can chew on for her sensory needs, such as bread sticks, carrots, ice, apples, grapes, along with some chewy foods, hoping this can help. Does anyone have any other ideas on foods which can give great positive feedback, she likes crunchy and chewy mostly?

Thank you, and I hope you have a great day!

  • I swear my Vit D - and I know some here on the forum also do too.  It is important not to have more than recommended dosage because it can result in over-deposition of calcium in bad parts of the body......but in moderation, Vit D supplementation is a defo good for me.

    In terms of chewing / crunch , I can suggest;

    1. Maoam - in moderation......because they do rot your teeth (ironically enough, given the context of your question).........but they are a joy to consume!

    2. Beef Jerk (dried beef).......quite expensive, but it does  last a while in your mouth.

    3.....And for the crunch, Pork Scratchings = CAN'T be beat, in my humble opinion.  Whilst you might think that they are not good for a human body, I have read plenty of research that suggests (rather counter-intuitively) that the particular range of fats in pork scratchings are actually really good for you.

    Apologies to any vegan/vegetarians......if my suggestions here make you gag!

    I'm really happy for you ParentingAutism - and it is always lovely to hear such human positivity here.

  • Thank you for your suggestions, she loves all of your ideas which is a bonus! She likes dried mango but it is so expensive so I may do that once a month as a treat. Chewy sweets, such as maoams, wine gums, and shell-less skittles have always been a go to for her and she is very good at making them last, she sometimes forgets she has them, unlike my son who will eat a whole bag in one go if we would let him. I am trying to focus on positives, especially since she has left school, she's a completely different person. It's lovely so thank you again
