Medication

My child is 10 and on the asd pathway, he becomes quite upset and angry quite quickly, he gets aggressive both in his tone of voice amd body language. Will medication help with this? Medication wouldn't be my first choice but it is starting to become quite disruptive to family life.

Apologies if this message sounds silly, I'm new to all this so not sure which way to go.

Thanks

  • Looking back at how childhood went for me I am glad to hear that you are open to help your child with this. I had no frustration tolerance and was highly perfectionist but noone knew why, and all of that made me aggressive and defensive as well. Assessing everything a little earlier would have probably helped, because then we would have known what was going on. Especially I feel sorry for myself for not understanding why I would get certain outbursts and all of those reactions that everyone would call unreasonable.

Medication is definitely something to discuss with a doctor, but figuring out what is going on in general can be a big help first. Does he see this behaviour as difficult to deal with and that you want to help him be less frustrated? Making clear it is not for fixing him, but figuring out together why this anger is coming up and what you can do to prevent all that frustration he is experiencing sounds like a first step.

If he also feels a little lost with his own behaviour maybe he can see a visit to assessment and doctors appointments not as an attack but a "scavenger hunt" to help him find solutions.
