Supported living for 18 year old

Hi, my 18-year-old child has autism and a learning disability. For various reasons, we’re exploring supported living options in our area for next year when she finishes school. It’s an incredibly difficult and emotional decision, and my heart breaks just thinking about it. If you or someone you know has been through a similar experience, I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts and advice. Thank you.

  • Hi and welcome to the community.

I'm so sorry to hear that you're having such a difficult time.

Although I can't offer any personal insight, you might be able to find a local support group through the NAS's directory:

    NAS - Autism Services Directory

You might also like to consider joining Ambitious About Autism's forum / online community for parents and carers. It has a specific focus on providing "a place where you can be yourself and connect with other parents and carers of autistic young people who can share your joys and understand your worries as a parent or carer of an autistic child".

I know it might seem a bit odd (maybe even rude) to recommend a different forum after you've just joined this one, but the NAS forum is less specifically focused on parents and carers, so you might be able to make more and/or quicker connections there to people with similar experiences, so - with apologies - I'm still making the suggestion! :)

Finally, the NAS offers a service that provides emotional support to parents and carers regarding their autistic children/grown-up children by putting them in direct contact with volunteers with whom you can discuss your feelings and experiences:
