Seriously Need Help

We just discovered our child has been self harming.  His arm is covered in marks. We took him to the hospital last night to be looked at. They said they would not admit him and self harming was normal for people suffering depression. I don't know what to do. He says he has to scratch and cut himself to cope with the loss of his internet friends. He is also thin from a poor diet, he refuses to eat at times. This is such a nightmare.  There's no help. I'm sick to my stomach that there is no fix.

Parents
  • Sadly, this is so typical within the world of females with autism.  Girls with Asperger's are often placid and internalise all their anxiety.  Bullying of autistic children is also very common.

As awful as the school has been, it's the parent who needs to pursue assessment and diagnosis of their child, and not give up.  When you say your daughter was discounted as having Asperger's, who by?  Has she already had an ASC assessment?

If not, go to your GP and request a referral for one, don't be fobbed off.

My eldest was diagnosed after our local CAMHS failed to diagnose her and I knew she had AS, so I persisted and put a case to the funding panel for a 2nd opinion so she was seen out of area, and finally diagnosed.  Although they diagnosed her with PDD-Other, when I know she has Asperger's (I have it myself and she has all the traits) but I wasn't going to quibble (as hard as it was) because it's still a diagnosis of ASC.  She now has a statement and has moved schools (she too was really bullied at her last school).
