Newly Diagnosed Son

My son has been been diagnosed with austism spectrum disorder this week and although we knew this was always a possibility (has had issues since he was 2yrs old) I am struggling to come to terms with his diagnoses! I know that he is still the same boy he was before he was diagnosed I just feel over whelmed and abandoned by the system as the peadrictian diagnosed on monday said a specialist health visitor would be in touch we have heard nothing and feel as though we are limbo we have no idea what the future will hold for us. I feel like I should be doing something at the moment to help my son but dont know what! Any advice on these early weeks would be greatly appericated.

  • Hi - you are definitely not alone now that you're on here Smile.  I'd ring the Paed's sec + ask if s/he knows when the hv will be in touch or ask how you can contact the hv yourself.  There's loads of info on this site so make use of that.  Have you applied for a statement of educational needs for your son so that he can get the support he needs at school?  How's he doing?
