Repetitive bouncing up and down on the bed

Hi,

Hoping for some advice. My son is 9 and is big for his age. When we come in from anywhere he will sit on the side of his bed and launch himself up and down on the bed, so from sitting to jumping standing and back down again - sounds like thunder in the house. It’s usually whilst watching something he is enjoying on the TV.

my question is do you know of any equipment I could get that would allow him to do what he needs to do but without it sounding like Thunder or it breaking the bed.

I have a gaming rocker chair and that doesn’t help - he is very tall and big for his age so I feel limited in what is available but he clearly needs to be able to do this type of movement and it feel unfair to get frustrated and ask him to stop because it’s like a huge repetitive banging for the rest of us in the house.

Thank you

  • do you know of any equipment I could get that would allow him to do what he needs to do but without it sounding like Thunder or it breaking the bed.

You could change for a non-sprung bed frame with a memory foam matress - this will remove the bounce back component so he will shift to using a different stimming technique that is less likely to make noise this way.

Maybe one of the little trampolenes you get for the gym - it can give the bounce element and if you make the feet our of rubber then the likelihood of banging on the floor will be reduced.

Lastly how about a suspended chair with springs in the mounting bracket - this will need to be fixed really well to the ceiling joists though. The mounting looks like this:

I would look for heavier duty versions of this (you may need to look at adult toy suppliers as some of them use heavy duty mounts - just don't ask how I know ) given your son is large and seems quite active.

  • Maybe, a gym/yoga ball that he can bounce on. They can provide great sensory input. They can also be used for multiple things, bouncing, rolling across their body, rolling on it across the floor.
