Son aged 5 - out of school

My son is diagnosed with ASD, Developmental Delay, severe Speech and Language Delay aswell as challenging behaviour secondary to ASD. He lacks any sense of danger and awareness.

EHCP was late by 2/3 months. When I sent back the draft I listened a specialist placement but when I got the final EHCP, the school listed was his current mainstream school. And since has caused issues with placing Jace.

So in October 2023, me and my son’s father decided to remove our son from mainstream school due to issues with safety, personal care not being maintained, etc.

They hid his bottle in a cupboard and didn’t open his lunch for him. My son is non-verbal and communicates by leading. These issues were discussed and resolved. But the day he returned back to school, the teacher left the classroom door open and my son was unsupervised. He ran out into the playground where all of the entrance gates were left open and he almost ran into the car park before a member of staff stopped him. Thats when we made the decision of enough is enough.

It’s now the end of May nearly June and no progress has been made by the Case Officer or the seniors to place my son. No alternate means of education have been put in place either, i.e tutoring. Its near enough impossible to get any response and we are almost at the end of the school year. We went through the complaints process and nothing has come from it.

We just dont know what more we can do. We are lost on where to turn now.

If anybody has any helpful information on paths we can take or just advice in general, it would be incredibly appreciated.

  • Have you tried reaching out to local advocacy groups or support networks for families with ASD children? Sometimes they have resources or connections that can help navigate these tough situations. Also, have you considered consulting with an educational psychologist? They might offer insights or recommendations for alternative educational settings.

  • Get advice from a specialist SEND charity such as IPSEA or the NAS advice service. If you can afford it, consult a lawyer specialising in SEND cases.
