toileting

Can anyone help? My 6 yr old son will not go to the toilet! He used to poo in his pants but even this has stopped this last week or so, he just holds on & I'm sure he must be at the very least uncomfortable. I'm really worried about the damage he is doing to himself. It's not a case of can't go but won't go so laxatives are not going to help. Thank you! x

  • could you try and go to the loo at the same time? get one of those larger potty's like a chair and a lift up lid. show him that there is a bottom to the potty and that it wil catch his poo if he decides to have a go - sit it next to your loo and when you go to the loo tell him thats what your doing and ask if he'd like to go on his loo at the same time, explain how it feels and that its "normal" to feel like that when we poo. no matter if it doesnt "produce" anything straight away, but may just support him to not be so afraid of the loo or pooing. just a thought.

  • Our girl is 4.5y old, she also had this problem to start with. I gave her Polish carrot/stawberry juice. You can get it from asda or tesco. They are called "Kubus" and kids love them( delicious ), after you drink regular kids size bottle ( easy to drink bottle top ) You just got to go on the toilet. This is how we "force" our child use her potty. Was needed only first few times, now she is ok to do it without the juice lol Also each time afterwards we are giving her chocolate coin, telling her how good girl she is ;)

I will add that she is severely autistic and she was resisting using the toilet untill she was 4y old. One day I got really upset with her and told her off for using the nappies, and I said children will laugh at her and noone will want to play with her at school because she will have stinky bum.. I didnt think she would understand, but the same day she went on the potty. I was shocked because she did it herself, just went on it and done a wee wee. I then acted fast on it, before she would change her mind and I took nappies away.Wish I've done it earlier on.

  • Hi, my son was like this for Years, and only over the last 3/4 years has he started to go, he is all-most 23 now. He was afraid of the toilet and NOTHING would make him use it, he could go weeks without a poo. I had to just accept it after trying all sorts of bribes ect. He is still in nappie pants But does use the toilet now. Every child is different :) Have hope.

  • Hi, thank you for your reply. Yes he loves sweets! However I can't get him to even sit on the toilet or even a potty, he just screams & hits me.....
