Statement for HFASD? HELP!

Hey guys,

Ive been reading through many discussions on here about getting a statement for a HF child.

From what I have seen, a lot of people have been told that its unlickly they will get one etc etc.

Well this is my problem. The people I have spoken to 1) a specialist school for HF children and 2) a family friend with an ASD teenager, both said I need to push for a statement. I agree with this because I feel that once my son (4) starts school he will need extra help.

At the moment he "copes" okay but is really unhappy when we get home. And ofcourse at this age its all play based learning.

So my question is..... have any of you got a statment of SEN for a HF child? and if so did you have to do it yourself? do you think I should go for it even without the schools backing?

The school ofcourse said he doesnt need one etc etc etc

Thanks in advance

Vicky

  • Hi - I've not been in your particular situation.  The school were very supportive about going for a statement although the other professionals involved with my son weren't.  But we went for the statement pre-diagnosis.  We heard all the same things about statements, eg how we would never get one.  But, it all went through, very straight forward.  If it were me, I would go for it without school backing and see what happens.  It's all about evidence so be prepared to fight your corner.

I would perhaps just question if your son is in the right school?  If they had any experience or understanding they would know that lots of children on the spectrum 'cope' at school but behave very differently at home.  Just a thought!

    Good luck
