Desperate need of advice please

Hello

My son has been falling into a deeper and deeper depression.  We approached our GP about this who then got us, and my sons school to fill out a couple of screener questionnaires - the results of which indicate that he is both ASD and ADHD.

My son has taken this news quite badly, I think mainly because of his anxiety levels which are high at the best of times and worries about the what this means for his future.  Over xmas he has talked about suicide and has self harmed.  I have booked an appointment with a psychiatrist today as CAMHS have a long backlog before they can put him in front of anyone.

I wonder if any parents on here have gone through similar and can offer any advice?  I am finding it so difficult to get any guidance other than 'hide the sharp things'.

Thank you, from a really desperate mum.

  • Hi. So sorry to hear your story. Its really similar to my 19 year old son's story so I can relate. Hopefully, once the initial shock of the diagnosis sinks in, he understands that some of the way he's feeling is down to the condition and the professionals put him on the right path.

Like you, we're experiencing long waiting times for an appointment but would his own GP not see him quicker? My son has met with his GP and there was talk about him being prescribed medication to help with his dark thoughts and anxiety while the longer term CAMHS help is still being awaited. We've had to get him anofher GP appointment as things have gotten worse during Xmas (probably understandable this time of year for a young person with ASD, anxious and struggling to fit in when everyone else his age seem to be partying) so chances are he'll get a prescription of some description this time. Might a chat with your GP be an idea, see if he/she feels medication (or a change in medication if he already takes) might be an idea, in shorter term at least to bring him (and you) some relief ?

I really hope things improve for you bofh.

  • Thank you so much - I really appreciate this.  Our GP said (over a month ago) that we had to have all prescriptions via CAMHS, that she was not able to offer any medical intervention because of his age (14).  But I will certainly give them another try.

Thank you so much, and I sincerely hope your son gets the help he needs to feel brighter too.
