Advice re schools and siblings

Hi all, I’m looking for any kind of government legislation/other legal document that states that siblings in the same school should NOT be utilised by staff to manage a child in meltdown. I kinda thought it would be common sense but apparently not, I have a feeling I might need official looking “page & paragraph” etc to back me up on why this shouldn’t be an option at all, let alone a regular one. TIA xx

  • I suspect the answer may be a bit more nuanced. I would say it depends on the circumstances and the relationship between the siblings. Whilst I would not say never, I can see this approach as problematic. The NT sibling may already be bullied because of his sibling, and being called out of class to deal with a sibling meltdown may only serve to further highlight a difficult situation. Just because they live together, don't assume the NT child knows what to do for the best, and depending on their age and maturity it is unfair to give them adult responsibility ... first and foremost the safety and welfare of all children in school rests with the adult staff.

Do you have a particular example in mind, or is this a general enquiry?  There is a lot of guidance on young carers, and that is the role that is involved here. There is also a huge amount of guidance on safeguarding, SEND and behaviour management in schools. But I can't recall seeing anything that deals with this issue specifically.
