Blue badge help needed

I have a 3 and a half year old boy diagnosed in April with ASD, sensory processing disorder, developmental coordination disorder (dyspraxia) and a communication delay. He also has very poor eye sight with double vision and no depth perception. He gets extremely anxious when going indoors, has very little awareness of danger, struggles to climb stairs, falls often and bumps into things wants to run the whole time including in car parks.

I requested a blue badge based on the above information saying he is a danger to himself and others but it has been declined because in the assessment he could walk 120m with a normal gait when in an empty, level carpark with no potholes, stairs or hazards and so was not severly disabled.

I included a letter from his nursery stating his difficulties and his diagnosos paperwork with the application.

I'm obviously appealing but has anyone had any experience of this and got any advice on how to get a successful appeal because if he fails he has to wait 6 months before trying again.

Thank you for your time in reading this.

  • Thank you for the advice. The issue with the OT was they saw him once, set him targets then have only rung once as he still hasn't met the original targets of using a fork, spoon and undressing so said he has to meet those targets first. The only professional he has seen regularly is for his eye sight. Being a lockdown baby hasn't helped. The assessor saw his anxiety and poor speech but they purely based it on his walking.

  • I have a blue badge for my son, I originally didn’t think I’d be entitled as he only gets low mobility. I’m not sure if the forms are the same as scotlands forms but there is a section at the back where a professional has to fill out and confirm. My sons paediatrician completed this section. If your child has someone from health, like OT, speech & language, peads, who can support what you’re saying then I’d try that option rather than the nursery.

    Hopefully you get it sorted.
