First time parent anxiety

I never thought I would be online asking about this. Five years ago I was still living at home, completely dependent on my parents, now I'm living with my girlfriend - wife to be - and we're expecting a child. I'm hoping to learn to drive soon so that covers being able to get our child to where she needs to be but I'm filled with so much anxiety to do with being a dad!

It's that part of life I've always dreamt of reaching and now I'm here I'm filled with anxiety because it's a step in to the unknown and in the future I'll need to be 100% capable of coping with whatever life throws at me.

I've already done ok with coping these last two years as Nicole, my girlfriend, had leukemia and in between the anxiety and meltdowns I was by her side every step of the way. Having a child though that to me is the biggest thing ever and even now I'm still not sure I'm going to do a good job.

I'll do my best but will it be enough?

Will she be autistic as well? I was diagnosed just three years ago. It wasn't a shock, more of an eye opener, Nicole suspected it because of her sister so I owe my thanks to her for this.

I still have a few months before our daughter is born, Nicole says it's time to prepare and enjoy the peace and quiet lol. It feels like it's more time for anxiety to take me on a joyride.

This isn't much of an introduction, sorry about that, I've never been good at introducing myself to anybody, online or in person. I'm going to go and have a cup of tea now. See you around.

  • Congratulations!

I'm not a parent but I'm friends with 3 others who are and they have always said the same thing, that parenting is mostly a learning experience. You learn each and every day. I'm sure it will be difficult at times but you'll be absolutely fine. You've already been there when your GF needed you most and now you have a little bundle of joy on the way too.

She's right, enjoy the peace now because very soon there's not going to be a lot of peace Wink

Take care of yourself and good luck.
