GCSEs

Hi, my autistic daughter has just started year 10. She has been told that she must do an oral presentation this year as part of the exam requirements. Although the school are allowing her to do this in front of a small group of friends only, she is still stating that she will not be able to do this. She is incredibly anxious about speaking in front of people. Can anyone help? Is there no special circumstances that apply to this?

Parents
  • She is incredibly anxious about speaking in front of people.

She could start with doing a presentation in front of you (something small), then in front of a friend, then a few friends and build up her confidence.

I suspect we could pull together a few people from here to act as friendly "strangers" if she wants to test herself to a level beyond what she will experience in the exam itself -  all done virtually of course, but it won't reduce the impact of it.

Teaching her anxiety management techniques should also help with the situation since the school have already taken steps to accommodate her needs.

    Good reading around this is:

Asperger Syndrome and Anxiety - A Guide to Successful Stress Management - Nick Dubin (2009)
    ISBN 9781843108955

My thoughts on this are that it is a good teaching opportunity for her to take more control and develop the skills she will need for the years ahead as she will inevitably have similar situations to deal with in work or higher education.
