Autism Anxiety

Hi, wondering if anyone can give me advice please.  I am at my wits end with my 15 year old son, he is so up and down it is off the scale, he creates scenarios in his head that won't ever happen (what if al the time).  He was diagnosed with CAMHS but they were no help at all and just said if he doesn't have a threat to himself then you are discharged.

He worries people are after him, won't go out of his room or open his window in hot weather in case someone climbs through and gets him, on the rare occasion he does go out he over analysis it all week and again things he's going to be beaten up and so on.

He tells me everything and messages me constantly with these made up situations but it is getting worse.  I was wondering if anyone has gone down the medication route and if a GP would prescribe it to a child, this is a last resort and I really don't want to do it but he has no quality of life because of it and its having a massive effect on the rest if the family and my daughter.

Thanks

  • Hi - I think your son would benefit from Talking Therapies. I would go back to your GP and see what is available. I would be very wary about giving a 15 year old medication. It would be better if your son could be taught strategies to help him deal with his anxiety. I’m autistic and both my children are autistic and I think anxiety is so often a problem for autistic people. No medication ‘treats’ autism and autistic traits - but we can learn strategies to apply to help us manage our anxiety.

  • I can't offer any he;p Im afraid as I am on here looking for advice for a similar situation, my son is also 15. He barely leaves his room, and now has been unable to go back to school (we had only planned for an hour a day at his SEN school). So, I can sympathise with your situation, I wish I had an answer!
