Daughter is still waiting for assesment and school are failing her

My daughter is now 12 and only just waiting for an assessment after ending up in A&E with self harming. We were always dismissed with anxiety and separation anxiety she had self harmed even in primary school. I’ve tried to chase up the referral and keep being told it needs to be done by different people or it has been done and they’re waiting meanwhile my daughter is struggling so much as am I. How can I get the school to support her properly instead of just suspending her for misbehaving or not sticking to things like uniform policy?

    I'm sorry to hear that your daughter's school isn't supporting her properly. The NAS website has many articles on how schools could help autistic children. You could show this article to the head teacher: https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/professional-practice/school-improvement

  • Firstly a caveat - ther following are what I would do in your situation. It is not intended as advice as we are not allowed to offer medical advice on this forum. Now with that out the way:

    I would get in touch by writing to the schools SENCO and ask them to arrange the referral as you have reasonable suspicions that your daughter is exhibiting autistic traits.

    Also write to your GP, include the contact info for the SENCO and tell them that you are concerned that they are avoiding their responsibility and that you want the GPs advice on alternative ways to be assessed,

    If you get no responses within a few weeks then it is time for a lawyers letter to the school  mentioning things like dereliction of duty, allowing child endangerment etc - stuff to get the schools lawyers really interested in sorting it out.

    Obviously keep a journal of your communications including copies of emails / letters in case you do need to set the lawyer on them.
