Going back to school

School starts back for my eldest on Wednesday 12pm. She does have some anxiety but usually it will kick in hours before that morning.

There are a lot of changes, too many to even count and is very confusing and overwhelming for the both of us. She will need to get the bus to school and walking from the bus stop to school is the hardest transition for her. A friend is going along to comfort her and to keep some things familiar. They will get the bus hours before school then there's not rush if they get stuck in traffic or whatnot. Then they will walk past school and get McDonalds then walk and sit by a wall on the same road as school. Her friend will stay around the area ready to see her after school to come home.

It make me feel better knowing she is with someone especially after the recent incident. We have new mental health crisis cards, pecs, Schedules and so on. She is becoming less verbal and struggling to communicate because pecs don't cover everything so going to buy a tablet for an aac device and app so if anyone has any recommendations that is amazing.

Her communication is really bad, she struggles so much. She had her hercut and she was happy the next minute her sister turns round and says 'there's something wrong with her eyes'. They were black and she fainted and lost consciousness. She was standing up and couldn't say she needed to sit down or that she felt unwell, she just tries fighting it and that happened.

Any tips on aac apps on android tablets and what tablets are good. Also how to deal with transitions because I will be working so won't be home that morning either.

  • I don't know anything about apps but I do struggle a lot with transitions. I think it's definitely good that a friend will be with her and a step by step plan for what will happen that day. If this is kept up for a little bit it should be able to get better over time, even if slowly.

  • I definitely agree. Her friend has said that she can accompany her for that week, Wednesday to Friday, before she goes back to college. It does always take a lot of time but we do get there in the end. With all the changes, we are focusing on what we know will be the same and why the change has happened and how it can be a good thing rather than a negative. This has helped.

She is ordering herself a tablet tomorrow, using her PIP money, so we can use Avaz AAC app which she has just started using. She has a bulky pecs folder and with everything else she needs to take to school its a lot so hopefully this will be good. Maybe her pecs can just stay in school
