Books to explain autism to an autistic child

I have autism, but my nephew (age 8 but working at a 5 year old level of understanding) has recently been diagnosed.  His parents were wondering if there are any good books that explain autism to an autistic child? He masks a lot and doesn't tell adults when something is wrong or if someone at school hits him.  We did chat about having an autistic brain, but he said he doesn't.

  • I would suggest All Cats Are On The Autism Spectrum by Kathy Hoopmann, a wonderful picture book that explains the joys of autism as well as the difficulties we face.

  • Hi!

Below I have recommended some books, I hope they help start the conversation around autistic identity and experience for your nephew. There are some brilliant autistic authored children’s books explaining autistic experience in a very simple and relatable way.

    1. Just Right For You - a picture book explaining autistic experience and differences written by an autistic author. I know you said you are working at a 5 year old level of understanding so I hope this is appropriate.
    2. The Secret Life of Rose - written by an autistic child and her autistic parent, explains masking.
    3. My brain is a race car
    4. A Day With No Words
    5. Neurodiversity! What’s that?
    6. Some Brains
    7. Why Johnny Doesn’t Flap! NT is ok!

I hope these books can provide a positive introduction to your nephew’s autistic experience! They are all available on Amazon.

In case your nephew is more interested in watching videos, here is a brilliant video explaining autistic experience by autistic children:
