another baby?

Good afternoon,

my wife and I have a 3 year old soon who has recently been diagnosed. We are keen to have another baby in the next year or so but we are now frightened that if it is genetic if another child will also be autistic. Is it genetic or is it something that a child is born with?

also, are there any sort of tests we could have before we start trying for another baby that determine if it is anything with either of us?

thanks

Mike

  • There is no genetic test you can do currently, unless your son has something like Ehler's Danlos or another named condition that causes autism or autism-like features.  My second child has worse issues generally than my first as she has problems with hypermobility too and had a speech regression.

I have Asperger's syndrome.  I have two children who are both on the spectrum.  I do believe many cases are genetic, but it could also be epigenetic, where if you have a certain genetic make-up the condition is triggered by environmental causes such as toxins or immune problems.
