another baby?

Good afternoon,

my wife and I have a 3 year old soon who has recently been diagnosed. We are keen to have another baby in the next year or so but we are now frightened that if it is genetic if another child will also be autistic. Is it genetic or is it something that a child is born with?

also, are there any sort of tests we could have before we start trying for another baby that determine if it is anything with either of us?

thanks

Mike

  • My understanding is that they don't yet know what causes autism although there is very possibly a genetic factor.  Therefore, I don't think anyone would know what to test you or your partner for at this point.

Incidentally, I have three children, two of whom don't have autism.

If you are very concerned, perhaps you ought to speak to your childs paediatrician or perhaps your GP.  I am sure they would be able to give you statistics if that would help?

    All the best
