Am soooo angry,:-/

Have just had a phone call from my sons school from the senco teacher there after we had gone into to speak about r son, ( Son is 10 and we off to a consultants app this week for a review, he was diagnosed as developmental delay, hypermobility and delayed speech at 4yrs old, my little man shows typical syptoms of autism, hand flapping, finger biting, frightend to death of google earth, unsociable at school, etc) The so called expert teacher who has on several occasions imformed me she has been dealing with special needs children for over 20yrs and spot autism a mile away, told me after careful consideration and dealing with my son at school she believes theres is nothing wrong with him and he just hand flapping, feet stamping etc to get attention, he knows exactly what he is doing and if he carries on this behavior in upper school he gonna stick out like a sore thumb and be bullied, she then went on to ask if she could film him in whilst in school while he is exhibiting these behviors and then show him how stupid he looks!!!! words cannot describe how annoyed i am!!! how dare she!!! i am just glad she down the other end of the phone because i woudnt have trust myself not to smack her one right in the chops!!! sorry to rant on here guys but really needed somewhere to vent and know people on here are understanding as many of us r going through the same experiances, i feel like my head might actually explode with anger!!

    Somewhere i'd seen the point before about her wanting to film your son and play it back to him. That I suspect is nowhere in her remit, grossly irresponsible and ethically cause for concern. She cannot actually film a child without consents.

  • This puzzles me a bit. A SENCO's duties are rather broad, and mostly liaison, promotion and support to colleagues. He/she may be expected to spot special education needs in children, particularly in the areas of cognitive/learning needs, behavioural issues, communication and interaction and physical issues.

    BUT that means if he/she spots anything they are supposed to bring in external advisers. They aren't there as gatekeepers, and are not likely to be responsible for independent diagnosis. Nor is she likely to be remotely expert in specific conditions unless she has additional qualifications, and the job being so broad she is unlikely to have had much time for that.

    This one claims she has been working with special education needs for over twenty years, so she came into the job before 1993. How much referesher training has she had? Probably not a lot.

    So she has, I suspect neither right nor qualification to say what she has said to you. So you need to challenge this. She has no right to play gatekeeper. And as a personal observation she sounds to me thoroughly unprofessional and lacking compassion - probably a manager rather than a carer. She doesn't want complications on her patch!

    Therefore not the right sort of person to be working with vulnerable kids.

  • If she's that much of an expert why isn't she specialising in special needs, why is she in mainstream?

  • Sadly many of us parents have come across teachers who believe that such behaviours are attention seeking and it is unlikely that these teachers are going to change their opinion or indeed how they behave.  My advice to you is to approach the school with strategies that you believe will make a difference for your child and why.  for example if you know that he would benefit from a "safe place" to go to when he is upset, then maybe they could incorporate that into his environment.
