Help with 4 year old whose started school

My son has autism and has just started school and the teachers are saying that even though he appears to love it, he is screaming, shouting and pushing the other kids around.  I have asked him why but he says thats just what he does.  I think the teachers are struggling and I am not sure what to do next?

We are awaiting news on whether he has got a statement but its been over six months since we heard anything.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

  • Hi - I know the statement process can take a long time but they have a timeline which they have to stick to by law (I think).  With ours, they gave us pretty clear dates as to when we would hear from them.  I would probably be chasing them up and ringing to see where they are in the process.

It must be a massive sensory overload for him.  Any child can struggle starting school but for a child with autism I think it can be extra hard.  Are they offering him any 'quiet time' and giving him the chance to unwind and relax?  It has made a difference to my child but then he has 1-1 to help facilitate it...
