School LSA

Hello, my daughter attends a mainstream school and she's got EHCP. Her LSA was changed recently because the previous one is pregnant. The SENCO told me that they've decided to be alternating the children's LSA's just avoid them being dependent on a particular person. She claimed this was not only applicable to my daughter but to every other child in school with special needs. It sounded awkward to me, but I understood the reasons. 

I was at the school yesterday for a different reason and I saw the new LSA that was introduced to my husband about a week ago. I saw the previous LSA too, I decided to ask them questions and from what I got, it seems that, what the SENCO told me wasn't true about rotating the staffs. The thing that baffled me was the new LSA didn't look presentable at all. She looked like she needs a lot of care. 

My question is, is it possible for me to talk to the SENCO about the appearance of the new LSA?

  • Obviously it’s possible the question is is it advisable. I doubt very much the way that she or he looks really affects their ability to do their job. Just because theyre not coming into school in a suit every day it doesn’t mean that they’re not good at their job. No if you think the LSA isn’t good at their job then that’s a much better thing for you to be taking up with them. On one level I would say just be glad but they’re not coming in a bikini.

    also if you’ve been told something by the school that later turned out to not be the truth I think that’s definitely worth bringing up with them. I would imagine having the LSA of an autistic child switched regularly it’s not a good fit for that child. Not having the children get attached to a particular LSA may make life easier for the school but I am not convinced it’s the best quality of education for the child.

    but I’m no expert on any of this and that’s just my opinion.
