My son is refusing to wear clothing and leave the house.

Hi,

I’m looking for help and advice, just a little background on my sons current situation. My son who’s 7 years old stopped wearing clothes and refused to put them on, following this he stopped and refused to brush his teeth, have a bath and hair wash, using the toilet, ETC:  So this means he has not been able to attend school and visit places he normally loves to go to. I have asked multiple professionals for help and none of them have seen anything like this and we have been stuck in this situation for a year. Within the last 4 months we have managed to regain teeth brushing and bathing, but clothing and re using the toilet are still an ongoing issue. Unfortunately I cannot pin point a trigger which may have triggered current circumstances but he has mentioned covid and lockdown and the gp seems to think it could be a delayed reaction to covid and all the lockdowns. I believe that it could be a delayed reaction to covid aswell as other contributing factors but as he does struggle with areas of social communication this may make it difficult for him to fully express himself to the issues .

any help and advise gratefully appreciated, even if you have a similar story I would love to hear from you and what helped you. Thank you

  • But one thing all of those things have in common is it involves fibres and chemicals rubbing up against the skin. It’s possible he’s been bearing this for a very long time and simply got too much. Maybe the clothes were always uncomfortable the soap was always itchy the toothpaste always tasted funny. But because he got out of the habit of tolerating it over Covid now he’s rebelling at the thought of having to put up with it again
